Description:
Four different views of Jack the “lunatic” as he is sentenced to life in prison at the end of the movie “Reefer Madness,” a 1932 cult-classic U.S. government propaganda film extolling the evils of the marijuana plant. At the end of the movie, the camera flashes four still shots of Jack as he is being sentenced and it reminded me of the album cover for the Beatles’ 1970 Let it Be.
So, I paused the DVD player at each of the stills and captured each image with my 35mm Canon.
I then arranged the four prints in a square and scanned them into a single image that I could project onto the canvas.
I then painted the image, SIX times… every line, into a posterized version of what I saw.
Then it got the pour coat. Twice.
The painting was damaged at a show in 2020 and has since been repaired, but the damage does still show a little.
After twenty minutes of bright light, this painting glows in the dark!
The glowing color is viridian, making this a four-color painting, however; one can only see two colors at a time: Burnt Umber over Antique White in the day, and Black over Veridian at night!
A non-glowing, un-coated reproduction of this work was commissioned by the Heavy-Metal Band “Heart Attack Jack” for their 2008 debut album cover “Smack You Blue”.
With the double layer of pure acrylic on top, this painting comes with a limited ten-thousand year warranty.
